Why Does My Autistic Child Stand Too Close to Other People?
Personal space is a social rule that many children need to learn directly. Your child may be friendly, curious, sensory seeking, or may simply not notice how close they are standing. Teach a clear visual rule such as “one arm’s length,” practice it during calm moments at home, and use simple reminders in public. Appropriate distance also changes by situation—family, friends, strangers, and crowded spaces may all be different—so teach the skill gradually rather than expecting your child to figure it out automatically.
