Why Does My Autistic Child Throw Food or Objects When Frustrated?
Throwing can happen when a child feels overwhelmed, frustrated, unable to communicate what they need, sensitive to a texture or sound, or desperate for more control. Keep people and breakable items safe first, then show your child where the item can go instead. During calm moments, teach simple alternatives such as “help,” “break,” “all done,” or placing the item in a bin. Look for patterns around when throwing happens so you can reduce triggers and give your child a safer way to communicate the same need.
