Why Does My Autistic Child Touch Everything in Stores?
Touching items in a store can come from curiosity, sensory seeking, excitement, or simply trying to understand a new environment. Before shopping, explain one or two simple expectations and give your child’s hands something useful to do, such as pushing the cart, carrying the list, or holding a fidget. Teach phrases like “Can I touch?” and offer safe alternatives when possible. Short, calm reminders usually work better than repeatedly saying “Don’t touch.”
