Why Does My Child Repeat Words and Phrases From TV or Videos?

Repeating words, lines, or phrases heard in shows and videos is often called echolalia. Repetition can serve many purposes: a child may be communicating something, expressing excitement, processing an experience, practicing language, or using familiar words when creating a new response is difficult. Instead of immediately stopping the repetition, listen for what the phrase may mean in that moment. A familiar line might be your child’s way of asking for something, commenting, joining an interaction, or regulating themselves. Respond to the possible meaning and model useful language they can build on.
