Why Does My Child Say “I Don’t Know” to Every Question?
“I don’t know” doesn’t always mean your child lacks the answer. Sometimes the question is too broad, they need more processing time, they are unsure how to organize their thoughts, or putting what they know into words is difficult. Instead of immediately repeating the same question, make it smaller. Offer two choices, use a picture, ask a yes-or-no question, or quietly give them additional time. The goal shouldn’t be to get the fastest answer. It’s to create a way for your child to successfully show you what they know.
