Why Does My Child Struggle With Free Time or Independent Play?

“Go play” sounds easy, but unstructured time can require a surprising amount of planning. A child has to choose an activity, figure out how to begin, find what they need, stay engaged and decide what to do when the activity ends. Too many possibilities can sometimes make choosing harder rather than easier. Try creating a small visual menu with a few familiar choices: blocks, drawing, books, toys, outside play or quiet time. Preparing materials and helping with the first step can also reduce the effort required to begin. Structure doesn’t take away independent play—it can provide a starting point from which independence grows.
