Not wanting hugs, kisses, tickling, or unexpected touch does not mean a child is unaffectionate. Touch may feel intense, uncomfortable, unpredictable, or simply less enjoyable to them. Ask before touching, allow time for an answer, and respect “no” or moving away. Affection can also look like sitting nearby, sharing an interest, bringing you a favorite object, helping you, talking about something they love, or choosing another way to connect. Respecting boundaries helps build trust.
