Why Doesn’t My Autistic Child Notice When They’re Hungry, Thirsty, or Need the Bathroom?
Interoception is the sense that helps us notice signals from inside the body, such as hunger, thirst, needing the bathroom, temperature, pain, tiredness, or rising emotions. Some autistic children may notice these signals later, experience them differently, or have difficulty identifying what the sensation means. Predictable routines, visual reminders, regular opportunities for food, drinks, and bathroom breaks, and simple conversations about body signals can help children gradually build awareness and self-advocacy.
