Why Is Eating So Hard for Some Autistic Children?
Eating challenges in autism are often more complex than simple “picky eating.” Sensory differences can make certain textures, smells, temperatures, or tastes feel overwhelming. Familiar foods may feel safer, while anxiety, changes in routine, oral-motor differences, reflux, constipation, or difficulty noticing hunger and fullness can also play a role. Keep mealtimes low-pressure, offer familiar foods alongside new options, introduce changes gradually, and involve your child in choosing or preparing food when possible. If eating is very restricted, swallowing is difficult, growth is affected, or you are concerned about nutrition, medical guidance is important.
