Why Is My Autistic Child Suddenly Struggling With Skills They Could Do Before?
Sometimes a child temporarily struggles with skills they previously used more easily. Increased stress, illness, pain, sensory overload, higher demands, major changes, or exhaustion can all make familiar skills harder to access. Reduce demands when needed, return to familiar supports, look for possible physical or environmental causes, and rebuild from simpler steps. A sudden or significant loss of abilities should not automatically be assumed to be “just autism”; persistent or concerning changes deserve medical evaluation.
