Why Won’t My Child Start a Task Even When They Know How to Do It?
Knowing how to complete something and being able to initiate it are different skills. A child may understand the assignment, know how to clean up, or be perfectly capable of getting dressed—and still have difficulty beginning. Starting can involve shifting attention, figuring out the first step, organizing materials and planning what comes next. When all of that feels like one large demand, the child may appear stuck. Make the beginning tiny and concrete: “Open your book.” “Put one toy in the basket.” “Pick up your shirt.” You can also prepare materials, use a visual checklist, or start the first step together.
