Why Won’t My Child Tell Me What They Did at School?
What did you do at school today?” sounds simple, but answering it can require several skills at once. Your child has to remember events from an entire day, decide which ones matter, organize them, find the words, and formulate an answer—possibly while already tired or overloaded after school. Try replacing one broad question with something concrete: “Did you play outside today?”, “Who did you sit with at lunch?” or “Was recess fun or hard?” Give your child time to answer and remember that communication doesn’t have to happen immediately after school. Sometimes a smaller question—or simply waiting until later—makes sharing much easier.
