Why Your Child Knows the Answer but Can’t Answer Right Away

A delayed response does not automatically mean your child didn’t hear you or doesn’t know the answer. Answering can involve several separate steps: hearing the question, understanding what it means, finding the information, organizing a response, and communicating it. Some children simply need more time between hearing a question and producing an answer. After asking, try waiting quietly instead of immediately repeating or rephrasing the question. Keep your language clear and allow responses through speech, gestures, pointing, AAC, or other communication methods. Sometimes the most helpful thing a parent can give is a few extra seconds.
