Why Your Child May Need a Break Even When They Look Fine
A child can look calm while still using significant effort to process noise, follow instructions, understand other people, manage sensory input, remember expectations, and decide how to respond. Watch for changes rather than waiting for obvious distress. Becoming unusually quiet, more restless, less interested, more emotional, tired, withdrawn, or increasingly comfort-seeking can sometimes signal that demands are building. Try offering a break before your child becomes overwhelmed. Reduce sensory input when possible, provide a quiet space, keep language simple, and allow them to return when ready. A break does not have to be a reward for reaching a breaking point—it can be a proactive support.
