Why Your Child Remembers Tiny Details but Forgets Simple Instructions
Memory isn’t one single ability. A child may remember a route from weeks ago, facts about a favorite subject, song lyrics, or details from a movie while still having difficulty holding a short instruction in mind long enough to act on it. Everyday directions can involve attention, working memory, language processing, task initiation, and competing distractions—all at the same time. Instead of assuming your child wasn’t listening, make the information easier to hold onto. Give one short step at a time, use pictures or written reminders, reduce competing distractions when possible, and allow processing time. Remembering meaningful details and remembering a spoken instruction place different demands on the brain.
