Why Your Child’s Communication Skills Can Change From Moment to Moment
Your child may ask clearly for something they want, need extra time to answer a question, repeat a familiar phrase, talk confidently about a favorite subject, and then communicate very differently when stressed. These differences do not necessarily mean a skill has disappeared. Communication depends on much more than simply “knowing how.” Processing demands, sensory input, familiarity, stress, fatigue, language demands, and the situation itself can all affect how easily a child accesses a skill. Instead of asking, “Why can they do this sometimes but not now?” look at what changed around them. Giving more processing time, accepting gestures and other forms of communication, using visual supports, and reducing pressure can make it easier for your child to communicate.
