Your Child Hits When Frustrated | How to Respond and Teach Safe Hands
An autistic child may hit when frustration, sensory overload, anxiety, communication difficulty, or other intense feelings become hard to manage. During the moment, focus on safety, use a few calm words, reduce stimulation, and give your child space to regulate when possible. Teaching is usually more effective after the child is calm. Practice replacement skills such as requesting a break, saying or showing āIām frustrated,ā asking for help, or using another safe way to communicate discomfort. Consistent practice helps children learn that strong feelings are okay while hitting people is not a safe way to express them.
